Movieday is the revolutionary platform of film distribution with a high social-cultural impact that is redefining the pattern and the way on how movies are experienced in the theatres. The platform enables individuals to bring movies they want to see on the nearest and local cinema, and it has helped hundreds of independent filmmakers to sell more than a hundred thousand tickets in hundreds of film screenings.

About the role

Movieday is recruiting for a Chief Content Officer based in the company’s Milan office. The CCO will guide Film acquisitions and sales, with content sourced from independent studios

S/he will report to the CEO and the Producer of Marketing and Distribution providing critical support in setting strategy, deal negotiation, execution and management.

S/he will develop and execute domestic and international content licensing strategy focused on independent documentaries and feature films, driving user delight and engagement. S/he will manage key vendor relationships and assess new business opportunities. 

S/he will provide the sales across all cable, satellite, and digital releases. S/he will play key role in ensuring revenue processes and product assumptions are determined (for accurate revenue forecasting in the regions), and that license fees are allocated fairly across titles. The candidate must have prior experience in a deep understanding of TV revenue accounting rules and a strong understanding of TV licensing contracts (including rights and pricing). The role requires a detail-oriented individual who is financially & technically savvy and proficient in excel.  

The ideal candidate has strong critical thinking skills, focused on details and the ability to be highly entrepreneurial in a structured environment. S/he will have a strong background in and comfort with quantitative analytics and deep relationships.   

The CCO should be comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced environment, taking the initiative, managing multiple projects, and working to find creative solutions with partners under tight time-frames. S/he is also a motivated, self-starter with a keen interest in and aptitude for finding great content from all over the world.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and execute strategy for acquiring global rights to desirable Film programming, sourced from outside the major studios
  • Deliver growth of the annual sales budget year over year
  • Oversee local programming for Italy through a deep knowledge of the production landscape – both the creators and the distributors and the ability to identify appealing films early in the life cycle 
  • Identify and track upcoming films in pre-production and on the festival circuit
  • Monitor films receiving buzz on crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo  
  • Develop co-production models to gain access to global content rights from producers and local studios   
  • Utilize existing relationships with local and regional distributors to enable successful licensing of local content
  • Build content pipeline around specific genres and verticals
  • Participate in all aspects of negotiation (financial analysis and forecasting, contract drafting, security requirements, amendments)
  • Represent acquisition interests across the company (operations, legal, finance, business intelligence/reporting, content marketing) on a regular basis and as needed on a project basis   
  • Develop market expertise through continuous focus on and knowledge of the competitive and market environment — locally, in specific markets, and globally, across all territories
  • Assists with analyzing performance of Movieday’s theatrical releases and competitive tentpoles by maintaining forecasting models before and during a release.
  • Seek, negotiate and finalize license agreements of new releases and library titles, and aid in the strategic expansion of the Italian distribution business
  • Create strong relationships with linear TV and digital clients; understand their needs; problem-solve requests
  • Provide input into overall distribution strategies including offering reliable market feedback on titles and viable commercial targets
  • Negotiate TV/digital windows in a way that allows Movieday to exploit content in numerous ancillary windows
  • Brainstorm catalogue lifecycle opportunities and assist in promoting seasonal library titles
  • Keep a constant, keen eye on competitive trends and activities within the digital and theatrical distribution industry
  • Update the release schedule, sales grid, and other internal databases
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of the Movieday’s slate and sales presentations
  • Submit invoices and follow up on payments
  • Brainstorm catalogue lifecycle opportunities and assist in promoting seasonal library titles
  • Drive sales post-mortem analysis
  • Work closely with various cross-departmental groups
  • Partner with the Finance team on forecasting and budget management

Education and work experiences

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Experience working in film, marketing, or sales environment
  • Minimum of 1+ years of TV & Digital sales experience
  • Direct knowledge of market-specific players and television programming of European territories
  • General knowledge of traditional and emerging content distribution platforms 
  • Demonstrated experience in market analysis, competitive analysis and strategic thinking   
  • Demonstrated mastery of verbal and written communication skills   
  • Great analytical and critical thinking skills   
  • Ability to work independently and change direction frequently   
  • Ability to evaluate content on a creative basis   
  • Ability to manage and process detailed information while keeping perspective on the bigger picture   
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally and across multiple geographies and time zones   
  • Excellent project and time management skills
  • Numerate and able to provide clear financial reports
  • Knowledgeable at computer skills firstly Excel
  • Fluency in Italian and English
